GOVERMENT TO SET UP ICT REGIONAL CENTRES

Time for people to travel long distances to Kampala seeking for official documents like passports and National identity cards is about to end.

The Ministry of Information, Communication, Technology and National guidance is set to establish One-Stop centres in upcountry places soon.

State minister for ICT, Joyce Ssebugwawo says that her ministry was in advanced stages of turning Post Office buildings countrywide into ICT centres where people will access ICT related government services.

“Time has come where people who need passports, National IDs, registration of businesses and filing of income tax clearances will find all these services in one place at the post office”, she says.

Ssebugwawo, has been on a fact finding mission about the state of post office premises in eastern Uganda ahead of the implementation of the program. While in Iganga, she asked the municipal authorities to remove people that had set up kiosks on the post office land.

The minister also wants the bodaboda riders in Iganga to enter into a memorandum of understanding with her ministry to start offering courier services just like it has been done in Kampala with Safe Boda group.

Posta Uganda Managing Director James Arinaitwe says that all postal facilities in the country were still secure and that those that are occupying them, were there illegally. He says that nobody had sold any post office land.

Iganga District chairperson Ezra Gabula says that government should provide computers to all schools to facilitate learners appreciate ICT since the world has moved towards that direction.

RDC Sadala Wandera called for establishment of internet hot spots to allow learners do research and even the general public to easily access it at low costs.
